ABSTRACT

Transitional expressions are words or phrases that show how the meaning of one sentence is related to the meaning of the preceding sentence. They are essential to improving cohesion and cohesiveness of discourse in English. Transition expressions are essential in improving the flow of discourse in English. They signal the relationships between ideas, provides directions for how to piece together ideas into logically coherent argument, and avoid repetition of words and phrases. Transition expression can be a word, a phrases, a sentence, or an entire paragraph, and they can be used in different parts of a text to connect ideas and make references to other parts of the text. The method used in this study uses a qualitative method because it analyzes transition expressions in short story “The Eyes Have It”

Introduction


Transitional expressions are words or phrases that demonstrate how the meaning of one sentence relates to the meaning of the sentence before it.

They are critical in strengthening the coherence and cohesiveness of English conversation. transitional expression is a word or phrase that shows how the meaning of one sentence is related to the meaning of the preceding sentence. Also called a transitiontransitional word, or signal word(Richard nordquist). They assist to link diverse concepts and subtopics, give guidance on how to put together ideas into a logically cohesive argument, and reduce word and phrase duplication. Transitional expressions can be a single word, a collection of words, or a whole phrase, and they can be used to link concepts and make allusions to other portions of the text.

Transitional phrases are used to link ideas between or within sentences, as well as to alert readers to connections between paragraphs or blocks of material. They are cues that assist readers understand the direction of your writing. Conjunctive adverbs used to join or connect independent clauses such as however, hence, also, consequently, meanwhile, nevertheless, moreover, and furthermore, as well as transitional phrases such as after all, even so, in addition, on the other hand, for example, as a result, and in conclusion are examples of transitional expressions.

Ruskin Bond's short tale "The Eyes Have It" has become extremely famous among readers of all ages. The plot focuses on a blind young guy with a remarkable sense of observation and imagination. The skillful use of transition phrases is one of the important factors that contribute to the story's status as a literary classic. These statements are crucial in increasing the story's cohesion and cohesiveness, resulting in a more thorough knowledge of the storyline and characters. The purpose of this research study is to examine the usage of transition expressions in "The Eyes Have It" to better understand their significance in establishing a smooth flow of information. Ruskin Bond is a well-known novelist who is noted for his ability to build compelling stories. Bond's use of transition expressions to create a fluid flow of events and smoothly guide readers through the story is one of his exceptional writing abilities. "The Eyes Have It," Bond's short narrative, is a fine illustration of his ability with transition expressions. We will investigate how transition expressions contribute to the overall quality of the narrative through a comparative study of different parts of the story. This study paper will give significant insights on the relevance of transition expressions in literary works and their influence on improving the reader's experience as a result.

Method

In this research will use qualitative method approach to explore the transition expression in the short story “the eyes have it”. As according to Pritha (Pritha bhandari) Qualitative research involves collecting and analyzing non-numerical data (e.g., text, video, or audio) to understand concepts, opinions, or experiences. It can be used to gather in-depth insights into a problem or generate new ideas for research.

The method used in this research paper involved a comparative analysis of different passages in "The Eyes Have It" short story. We analyzed the frequency and type of transition expressions used in the story and how they contributed to creating coherence and unity in the narrative. We also compared the use of transition expressions in "The Eyes Have It" to another literary work to understand their significance better. Finally, we discussed the limitations of our study and suggested directions for future research in this field.

This research was carried out at a library or other setting where people may read and analyze stories. This study's population consists of general readers. The sample might be drawn at random from various reading groups. The short tale "the eyes have it" serves as the major source material. Books, software for text analysis, and note-taking tools are available in addition to the primary instruments. The story's text will be analyzed to collect data. This contains the story's transition phrase. The data will be analyzed qualitatively, with an emphasis on the interpretation of themes and characters in the tale.

 

Analyzing the Use of Transition Expression in “The Eyes Have It”

The role of transition expression in enhancing coherence and unity in “the eyes have it” short story : a comparative analysis.

Transition phrases play an important function in establishing coherence and unity in "The Eyes Have It" short narrative. These statements are used by the author to link concepts and create a seamless flow of events throughout the text. For example, the author employs the phrase "suddenly" to signify a shift in the story's direction and "then" to link two linked occurrences. These transition phrases not only contribute to consistency, but also assist the reader grasp the storyline. In comparison to previous publications, such as Edgar's "The Ambiguity of Change: An Inquiry Into the Nature of Psychoanalytic Reality," transition phrases are more common in "The Eyes Have It," making the plot more understandable. As a result, transition phrases clearly play an important function in creating coherence and unity in "The Eyes Have It" short narrative.

Some additional transition expression in the text are “meanwhile” to show relationship in time, “in fact” “ for example” to give examples, “however” “on the other hand” “in contrast” and “nevertheless” to show contrast, “likewise” to compare “in conclusion” to summarize or conclude.  

The usage of transition phrases in the short narrative "The Eyes Have It" is critical in increasing cohesion and unity. The author expertly use transition words like "suddenly" and "then" to emphasize shifts in the story's direction and link related occurrences. This study paper has demonstrated that the usage of transition expressions is an important aspect in making a well-crafted short narrative, and it is clear that the author has used them expertly to attain this aim. This study, however, indicates a possible weakness in that it only studies one short narrative. Future study might evaluate the generalizability of these findings by extending this approach to additional short tales or literary works. Furthermore, while this study demonstrates the relevance of transition expressions in improving coherence and unity, it makes no mention of any potential downsides or detrimental repercussions of their overuse. As a result, future study might look at the best way to balance transition expressions in order to produce a cohesive and interesting story without overloading the reader. Overall, this study contributes to the continuous improvement of knowledge in the field of literary analysis by emphasizing the need of paying close attention to the usage of transition phrases while building a well-written short narrative.

Conclusion

Finally, the study of "The Eyes Have It" short tale demonstrates that transition expressions play an important role in increasing coherence and unity in literary works. The author has used these terms deftly to create a continuous flow of events throughout the novel, resulting in a more thorough comprehension of the plot and characters. Furthermore, this study emphasizes the importance of transition expressions in the creation of a well-crafted short tale and gives significant insights into their influence on the reader's experience. Future study might apply this analysis to additional short tales or literary works to assess their generalizability and investigate the best balance of transition expressions to produce a coherent and interesting narrative. Overall, this research contributes to the continuous improvement of knowledge in the field of literary analysis by emphasizing the necessity of paying attention to the usage of transition phrases while building a well-written short narrative.
